Ways to Volunteer

Conversation Volunteer

Conversation lab volunteers help Riverside participants gain English fluency and confidence through small, informal group discussions. These conversations cover everyday topics such as food, hobbies, and favorite places to visit. The labs allow participants to practice what they're learning in our ESOL program and increase their comfort speaking with English-fluent New Yorkers.

Riverside Mentors

Riverside offers two types of mentoring: Career Mentoring and General Support Mentoring. Career mentoring helps participants better understand their field of interest and tap into their mentor's expertise, resources, and networks when appropriate. General support mentoring assists participants in navigating resettlement challenges, understanding local, state, and national systems, and becoming more actively involved in their communities.

Reading Groups Volunteer

Riverside Reading Groups are a dynamic part of our English language program, supporting learners from Beginner (Level 1) to Advanced (Level 5). These groups focus on building oral fluency by giving learners uninterrupted time to read aloud and develop rhythm, flow, and confidence. Volunteers listen closely while learners read, taking notes on pronunciation challenges and tricky words—without stopping them to define vocabulary, ask questions, or correct every error. After the reading period, volunteers model correct pronunciation, address words that impeded understanding, and practice any helpful sound patterns. By intentionally stepping back in the moment, volunteers create the space learners need to “turn on the word spigot,” reduce anxiety, and move from halting speech to natural, fluid communication.
